Christopher Columbus discovered America in 1492. He was born in Italy. His father and both grandfathers were cloth makers. Columbus was a seaman and made many sea voyages.

Most people in Columbus"s days thought that the earth was flat and they did not believe that beyond the Atlantic Ocean lay India. In 1492 the King and the Queen of Spain gave him money to go to India. He decided to sail west as he was sure that our planet was round. There were 3 caravels: the Santa Maria, the Nina and the Pinta. After sailing 4000 miles he reached some land.

The crew saw something like a white cliff and cried out: "Tierra! Tierra!". Columbus thought "that it must be India but it was not. It was a new land - a new continent. It was America. Columbus named the land they had reached San Salvador ("Holy Saviour"). People began to speak about the land as "The new World".

European people came to the New World for many reasons. Some hoped to find gold and silver. Priests and missionaries came to bring the Christian religion to the Indians. Among those who came for freedom was a small group of English people called Pilgrims. They wanted to start a new life and to have no religious problems they had in England.

In 1620 on the ship "Mayflower" they landed in the north-east of America. They set up a colony and called that part of the country "New England".

My discovery of America

When I hear the phrase “Discovery of America”, the first things that comes to mind is Christopher Columbus who landed on an island which he thought to be the "West Indies" on 12 October 1492, but he had really discovered the New World which is now the United States of America.

I do not know how America really is because I have never been there, but I have learned the information that I know about the United States of America from US made films, mass media, volunteers and television shows. That is why there are a lot of stereotypes about Americans all over the world. I do not believe all of them because my experience shows me that they are not always true. For example, the stereotype that Americans are fat and lazy, I do not agree with this. I live in a small town Taldykorgan where we have Peace Corps volunteers and none of them are overweight. They have normal weight as an average person in Kazakhstan. Also, Peace Corps volunteers are very hard-working because they really work and make so many projects to help people.

New York is a global city and exerts a powerful influence over the entire world in different spheres from finance to entertainment. One of the most famous places in New York City is the Statue of Liberty which I would like to see in person, not just in pictures or on television. I realize that the Statue of Liberty is not just a famous place; it is a historical symbol for millions of immigrants who came to America in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Also, New York City has beautiful architecture as in its skyscrapers. I can’t image how itwould be to see the tallest building in the world, in comparison, in Taldykorgan the tallest building has only 12 floors. From my point of view, “Broadway” is a paradise of theatrical performances. I have never been in a theatre. Maybe one day will I be there?

I have read a classical American novel which is called “To Kill A Mockingbird”. I was impressed by it and its author Nelle Harper Lee. The main scenes of this novel happened in Philadelphia. And I am really interested to see Philadelphia as it is a central location to African American history and as well as culture home to many national historical sites that relate to the founding of the United States.

Washington D.C is the capital of the United States of America. This city holds many important buildings such as: the White House, the World Bank, the U.S. Capitol, Howard University and 174 foreign embassies (include Kazakhstan). It is a place where many events happen every day and influence on daily lifeof the whole country. And it would be so interesting to take part in even one day of this capital.

My discovery of the United States of America is not just to see it, but feel, smell and touch it, on my own. The most important part of my discovery of America is to know what true or untrue about America which would be based on my experience. I was really excited to write this essay because I can just imagine how it will be in my fantasy. But if I experience it, I would be one of the happiest explorers of the United States of America.

Незнания об Америке порождают различные предрассудки у отдельных людей и даже целых народов. Чтобы разобраться в том, что такое Америка, нужно самому получить правдивые знания. И в этом я убедилась. Существует такой стереотип, что американцы толстые и ленивые, но я с этим утверждением не согласна. И могу разуверить многих. В наш город Талдыкорган, где я живу, на работу приезжают волонтеры Корпуса Мира, я с ними постоянно общаюсь, так как они работают в университете, где я учусь. Это обычные девушки и юноши, и вес у них такой же, как у обычных людей. Волонтеры Корпуса Мира очень трудолюбивые. Они умело сочетают труд и отдых.

Я узнала, что Нью-Йорк - это глобальный город, который очень влияет на мир в различных сферах жизни и развитии стран. Одно из самых известных мест в Нью-Йорке - это Статуя Свободы. Я бы хотела тампобывать, так как это не просто известное место, а исторический символ миллионов эмигрантов, приехавших в Америку в конце XIX века и начале XX. Привлекает Нью-Йорк красивой архитектурой и своими небоскребами. Мечта многих побывать хотя бы раз в таком высоком здании, упирающемся в самое-самое небо, а в моем городе самое высокое здание имеет всего 12 этажей. Нью-Йорк - это город всемирно известного Бродвея. Это счастье, кто там бывает. Может и я когда-нибудь там окажусь.

Познакомившись с американским романом «Убить Пересмешника» знаменитого автора Ли Харпер, я многое узнала не только о главных действующих лицах, но и о Филадельфии, как о центральном месте афроамериканской истории и событиях, которые повлияли на США.

И вот мы в столице Соединенных Штатов - Вашингтоне. Этот город известен многими зданиями. Здесь находятся Белый дом, Всемирный банк, Капитолий, Гарвардский университет и 174 посольств различных стран мира, включая посольство Казахстана. Вашингтон - ключевое место многих важных событий, влияющих на жизнь своей страны и других стран. Я бы хотела с удовольствием побывать в качестве туриста в этом городе.

Мое «открытие Америки» - это не только узнать о ней, но и увидеть, «почувствовать, понюхать и потрогать», узнать правду или неправду о ней на своем личном опыте. Об Америке говорят, что это великая страна, открыть ее в реальности - это мечта многих, в том числе и моя.

Цели урока:

Обучающая: научить связному монологическому высказыванию по теме “Открытие Америки” с опорой на текст.

Развивающая: развить коммуникативные навыки и навыки письменной речи по теме.

Воспитательная: сформировать у учащихся познавательный интерес и уважение к истории Америки – одной из стран изучаемого языка; расширить кругозор учащихся.

Задачи урока:

1. Тренировать учащихся в чтении текста с полным пониманием прочитанного.
2. Учить учащихся работать с текстом, выполняя различные лексико – грамматические упражнения.
3. Учить учащихся логическому построению устных высказываний на английском языке по теме.
4. Развивать навыки аудирования, говорения, письма.

In our days everybody knows what the “America” means. First of all it is the name of the country – the United States of America – or just America. And then America is the name of the two continents – North America and South America. These two continents, North and South America, form the part of the world called America.
